Witness or Co-Creator? Which is the Higher Stage of Consciousness?
Updated: 9 hours ago
Imagine you are sitting by a river at sunset. The waters flow silently, carrying twigs, flowers, and sometimes even debris downstream. You have two choices: you can sit quietly on the bank, simply witnessing the current, or you can step into the flow and gently guide the boat that carries you across.
This is the dilemma of every seeker: Is the highest truth to be the silent witness, resting in pure awareness? Or is it to be the conscious author, shaping and guiding life as a co-creator?
Both paths are honored in the lives of great masters. Ramana Maharshi sat in stillness, embodying pure non-dual awareness. Krishna danced and battled on the fields of dharma, shaping destinies. Jesus spoke of Oneness with the Father yet healed, taught, and created new movements of love. So which stage is truly higher?
To answer this, we must turn to the universal principles spoken in The Kybalion, and understood by seers across ages.
The Three Immutable Laws — Seen Through Non-Dual Eyes
According to The Kybalion, “The Principles of the Truth are Seven; he who knows these, understandingly, possesses the Magic Key before whose touch all the Doors of the Temple fly open.”
The three foundational, immutable laws point us toward one truth: Consciousness is the only reality. The All is Mind. The Universe is Mental. These are not tools to be “applied” like skills in the material world, but living principles that reveal themselves as one awakens to Pure Awareness.
Law of Divine Oneness At its heart, this law reminds us that everything is interconnected. Every thought, every breath, every vibration ripples across the Whole. In non-dual awareness, this is experienced directly: there is no “other.” What happens in one is mirrored in all.
Law of Correspondence — As above, so below. As below, so above. The same patterns that shape galaxies shape your breath. The same order that holds the stars holds the cells in your body. Non-duality teaches that there is not “two levels” but One Mind expressing itself in infinite scales.
Law of Vibration Everything moves, everything vibrates. From the densest rock to the highest prayer, all is frequency. To rest in Pure Consciousness is to perceive these vibrations not as separate movements but as ripples in one infinite Ocean of Mind. “True Hermetic Transmutation is a Mental Art.” To shift vibration is not to “do” something but to recognize the higher pole of Being and abide there.
Together, these laws point not to effortful application but to recognition. Once seen, they rearrange your life in alignment with higher order.
Witness vs. Co-Creator — Which Is Higher?
Now we return to our question.
When seekers move deep enough into their path, they encounter two seemingly different summits of realization. One is witness consciousness, the serene clarity of seeing all phenomena arise and dissolve, untouched, in pure awareness. This is the realm of non-dual realization (10D), where the inner masculine and feminine, Shiva and Shakti, are no longer in conflict but merged into a still, luminous oneness. The ancient sages described this as the end of striving, resting as the Self, free from identification with the body, mind, or world. Yet, another peak opens beyond. In this higher octave, realization doesn’t retreat into silence; it steps into expression. Here, the non-dual ground is embodied as authorship or co-creator consciousness (11D), the state where one can live amidst duality, engage with the outer world, and yet remain utterly unshaken in calm. It is the difference between dissolving into the ocean, and becoming the ocean that moves through rivers, rains, and waves.
Witness consciousness (non-dual realisation) is the stage where the seeker sees that there is no doer, no separation, only the Self. This is what Ramana Maharshi embodied, pure, still presence.
Authorship / Co-creator consciousness is when that same realisation expresses itself through form. The master acts, but not as an ego. Krishna speaks, fights, and loves; Jesus heals and teaches; Guru Nanak walks and sings. Outwardly they are creators, inwardly they rest in Oneness.
Thus:
10th Dimension (Non-dual witness) = Pure Being.
11th Dimension (Authorship) = The embodied expression of Pure Being in action.
Both are luminous, but in human evolution, authorship is often seen as a “higher flowering,” because it integrates witnessing into dynamic life.
Stages of Consciousness and the Laws
7D – Awakening Description: Initial glimpse of higher truth, intuitive insight, sense of unity Relationship to Laws: Begins to sense interconnectedness (Oneness) Spiritual Masters Teachings: Rumi (poetry of longing), St. Francis of Assisi
8D – Integrated Seeker Description: Lives with deep awareness of patterns; applies correspondence Relationship to Laws: Sees “as above, so below” in life and mind Spiritual Masters Teachings: Jesus, Buddha
9D – Vibrational Alignment Description: Aligns with higher vibration, lives with resonance Relationship to Laws: Applies Law of Vibration; begins conscious transmutation Spiritual Masters Teachings: Jhule Lal, mystic saints of Bhakti and Sufism. Guru Nanak (songs of Hukam/ Divine Law)
10D – Non-dual Witness Description: Pure awareness, no doer, no separation Relationship to Laws: Anchored in “I Am”; transcends polarity Spiritual Masters Teachings: Ramana Maharshi, Meister Eckhart, Abraham
11D – Authorship / Co-Creator Description: Embodied mastery: allows Law to express through form Relationship to Laws: Uses higher laws to harmonize lower; authors reality Spiritual Masters Teachings: Moses, Krishna, Lord Ram, Shiva, Prophet Muhammad
12D – Unity Consciousness Description: Effortless Oneness: Being and Doing are one Relationship to Laws: Laws dissolve into the Law itself Spiritual Masters Teachings: Buddhism, Sikhism, Christ Consciousness, Islam, Sanatan Dharma
At its essence, the highest philosophies of the world, whether spoken of as Christ Consciousness, Islam, Sikhism, Sanātan Dharma, Advaita Vedānta, or Buddhism, all point to the same dimension: the 11D field of unity-in-action, where the One expresses through the many without fragmentation. But the way this truth was expressed varied across time, culture, and the stage of consciousness of both the teacher and the people they served. The Source orchestrated not just the message, but also the messenger shaping it through the vessel’s personal development, temperament, and style. So Kabir sang it through poetry and song, Guru Nanak embodied it through devotion and simple living, Adi Shankaracharya carried it through sharp debate and knowledge, while the Christ revealed it through compassion and surrender. The Buddha pointed the way through silence, stillness, and detachment from suffering. Prophet Mohammad conveyed it through revelation and disciplined devotion. Guru Gobind Singh embodied it as the warrior-saint, uniting spiritual truth with the courage to protect dharma. Each was transmitting the same essence, yet through a form that could reach the hearts and minds of their time.
The Takeaway
So which is higher, the silent witness or the co-creator?
The answer is: authorship (11D) is the flowering of witnessing (10D). One is root, the other is blossom. One is silence, the other is song. Both are sacred, but together they reveal the full spectrum of consciousness, from pure being to embodied creation.
Seen this way, 10D non-dual witness and 11D embodied authorship are not competing truths but stages of one arc. The divine union of Shiva and Shakti, the still awareness and the flowing creative power, is the inner consummation of realization. But when that union is integrated into the marketplace of life, it becomes the higher dimension of authorship. Here, the sage does not only see through the illusion; they participate consciously in it, knowing it to be a play of mind. This is why the Hermetic wisdom reminds us: “The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.” Non-duality reveals the essence, but authorship is the art of living that essence in form - creating, relating, building, and dissolving without ever leaving the calm ground of Being.
Ultimately, the Laws are not outside us, nor something to be mastered. They are the very fabric of our awareness. To live them is not to do, but to be.
How to Live These Laws (Without Ego-Doership)
Hermetic wisdom offers us subtle ways of living the laws, not as techniques, but as gentle orientations:
Shift Planes, Don’t Struggle — When caught in heaviness of life, don’t fight it. Lift attention to the higher pole of the conflict; the lower dissolves naturally.
Transmute, Don’t Suppress — Darkness carries the seed of Light. Meet what difficult emotion arises with awareness, and allow it to reveal its higher form.
Anchor in the “I Am” — Stay rooted in Pure Being, the axis unmoved by life’s swinging pendulum.
Let Law Flow Through You — When aligned, actions arise spontaneously. You don’t “apply laws” but the Law lives itself through you.
When the river flows, you can sit by the bank in stillness or step into the boat and move with purpose. The witness rests in the silence of the water. The co-creator carries the silence into action.
Both are part of the One.
